We’re Still Here!

6 pm, May 21st, 2011, the date predicted by Harold Camping of Family Radio as the date for the rapture of the Church, has come and gone.  No one left the planet via the Rapture.  I am not really surprised, nor are too many other people.  Now all that is left are a lot of disillusioned followers of Mr. Camping, a lot of laughing unbelievers, and a world that largely shook its head and carried on as usual, feeling ever more justified for paying no attention to the message of Christ.

You have to ask yourself, “How could so many people be taken in by someone like Harold Camping, especially when the Lord Jesus expressly said no one would know the day or the hour of His return (Matthew 24:36)?”  I believe there are a couple of reasons:

Storm 2First, when we look at the world we see all the signs that the end is near.  Floods, fires, earthquakes, the upheaval of nations, the economy being all over the map, all point to the fact that we are heading toward the end of the world as we know it.  The daily newspaper reads like Matthew 24 or Revelation 6.  These are all signs that the end could be approaching.  All these things serve to make the message of individuals like Harold Camping seem credible.

Bible 1The second thing is that people by and  large do not study the Scriptures for themselves.  For far too many Christians the Bible remains a closed book.  They are more than content to be spoon fed by others rather than dig for answers themselves.  So, when someone like Harold Camping comes along and sounds like he knows what he is talking about, it is easy for uninformed Christians to fall prey to their suggestions.  Sad, but true.

Men like Harold Camping, regardless how eccentric, do serve a purpose, however.  They get us thinking about the fact  that history, as we have known it, will one day come to a close.  They remind us that Jesus will one day return and that we should…

“You, too, must keep watch! For you don’t know when the master of the household will return—in the evening, at midnight, before dawn, or at daybreak. Don’t let him find you sleeping when he arrives without warning. I say to you what I say to everyone: Watch for him!”  Mark 13:35 – 37  NLT  (emphasis added)

“Keep alert at all times. And pray that you might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors and stand before the Son of Man.”  Luke 21:36  NLT

“Be dressed for service and keep your lamps burning, as though you were waiting for your master to return from the wedding feast. Then you will be ready to open the door and let him in the moment he arrives and knocks.”  Luke 12:35 – 36  NLT

“We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us.  The night is coming, and then no one can work.”  John 9:4  NLT

Well, Harold, thanks for trying.  But next time…leave the dates out!

  1. Thanks Mac for your apt response to Harold Camping’s false prediction of Christ’s second coming. You’ve hit it right on the head.

My prayer for those in his camp would reconsider their ideology. While they have good intentions, I wonder if more harm was done than good. Here in the Czech Republic, in one of the most atheistic countries in the world, these kinds of predictions don’t drive people to Christ. Rather, it appears that these predictions repel them even further away from God, ramping up their mockery of the One who is certain to return.

Keep on posting truth Mac! May His kingdom come and His will be done in the life of the church and on earth, just as His will is being done in Heaven!

    1. Thanks for your comment Kevin. At least these unfortunate episodes provide us with the platform for dialoguing with people about the truth of Jesus’ return, and the fact we need to live in a state of readiness at all times.
