What a Way to Take a City!

In Joshua 5:13 – 15, Joshua had a unique encounter with the Lord.

13 When Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man was standing before him with his drawn sword in his hand. And Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us, or for our adversaries?” 14 And he said, “No; but I am the commander of the army of the Lord. Now I have come.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped and said to him, “What does my lord say to his servant?” 15 And the commander of the Lord’s army said to Joshua, “Take off your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.

During this encounter Joshua was given the strategy for taking the city of Jericho.  Talk about something that did not make sense!  They were to walk around the city once a day for six days.  On the seventh day they were to walk around the city seven times.  The priests were then to blow a long blast on the trumpets and the people were to shout with a great shout.  This is not your typical  military strategy.  However, when the people obeyed the word of the Lord, the walls of Jericho fell down flat and the city fell to the Israelites.  What a way to take a city!

Receiving and implementing the Lord’s strategies was the key to all the campaigns to possess the land of Canaan.  When the Israelites followed the word of the Lord there was always success.

Make Sure You Ask the Questions

I don’t know about you. but I have often failed to ask enough questions when entering into a new phase of life or ministry.  I have been guilty of thinking things would pretty much function the way they had in the past, or that the strategies for last season would be sufficient for the new one.  That’s a dangerous was to think!  Even though the situation may be similar in many ways, the strategy the Lord wants us to implement may be completely different.

Consider David warring with the Philistines in 2nd Samuel 5:17 – 25.  After David was anointed as King over all of Israel, the Philistines marched out against him twice.  In both instances David sought the Lord as to how he should respond.  In the first instance, the Lord commanded him to meet the Philistines head on.  David did as he was instructed and inflicted a heavy defeat on them.  The second time the Lord instructed him to attack them from the rear.  The Philistines were once again defeated.  What made the difference?  I’m not sure.  One thing I do know is that the key to victory in both cases was David implementing the Lord’s strategies.

New Seasons and New Strategies

New seasons and new strategies go hand-in hand.  While yesterday’s strategies may have been effective, we dare not assume they will be effective today.  What is the Lord specifically asking you to do in this new season of your life?  Asking the questions and following through with the answers is what living in the Reign is all about.
