Every once in awhile, I need to be reminded of who I am in relation to the King.  It’s so easy to forget and begin limping through life on the wrong footing.

From My Journal

“Being My child is your primary identity.  Everything else has to flow out of that.  If you identify yourself in any other way, you put yourself in the place of having to support that identity through the validation of others.  This will lead to exhaustion and frustration, depending on how good you are at making others believe in you.

“Sonship affects everything.  It affects how you relate to Me as well as how you pray.  It affects how you view yourself and others.  It affects how you carry yourself and conduct yourself in every situation you face.  When you know – really know – that you are My son, you will experience a sense of security that you have never known before.”

The Battle for Identity

Someone once said that every battle is a battle for identity.  That may well be true.  Think of the temptation of Jesus.  He had just been baptized by John in the Jordan River.  As He came up from the water, a voice came out of Heaven saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”  (Matthew 3:16 – 17)  It was a powerful moment of affirmation.

Immediately Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness.  There He met the tempter head on.  Twice the tempter challenged Jesus’ identity.

“If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”  (Matthew 4:3)

“If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down…”  (Matthew 4:6)

Fortunately, Jesus was completely secure in His identity as God’s Son.  He didn’t have to prove anything to Himself or anybody else.  He didn’t yield to the enemy for a second.

Put It Off

We are often tempted to slip back into our old identity that we had prior to becoming a child of God.  The problem is, that person was crucified with Christ.  In the mind of God that person no longer exists.  That is why Father never dialogs with that old identity.  He constantly relates to us in our new identity as His children.  He calls us back to walking as who we are in relation to Him instead of who we used to be.  That is why we need to heed the words of the apostle Paul in Ephesians 4:17 – 24 and put off that old identity once and for all, get our thinking sorted out, and put on our new identity once and for all.

Below I have posted a song by Jonathan and Melissa Helser.  It really affirms our identity as children of the King and the resulting freedom from fear.  Let it be a comfort to you in the night.  Let it awaken you in the morning.  Let it be your companion throughout the day.  Let is assist you in living in your true identity as you go about your day living in the Reign.
