While I normally don’t blog on Saturdays, I decide it would be prudent for me to weigh in on recent development in the United States.

On June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court of the United States voted to legalize same sex marriage in all 50 States of the Union. While there have been, and will be, all kinds of responses to their decision, I would like to call God’s people to a well reasoned and logical response based on the fact that we are His first and foremost.

The Place to Start

The place to start is asking ourselves the question, “What really happened here?”

Actually…nothing.

Many are crying out that the US Supreme Court redefined traditional marriage. They actually didn’t. All the Court did was rule as to what will be considered legal in the United States. They did not alter the definition of traditional marriage because the definition of traditional marriage cannot be altered. Traditional marriage has always been, and will always be, the union of one naturally born man and one naturally born woman, to the exclusion of all others, until death do them part. The only One who can truly redefine traditional marriage is the One who defined it in the first place. To my knowledge He has not budged from His position.

But…But…But…

I know this ruling will undoubtedly raise all kinds of questions. Please allow me to address a few of them here.

But what if they now try and force churches to perform same sex marriages?

Let them.

We will graciously decline their request, then joyfully submit to whatever punishment they deem necessary.

But what if they take away our license to officiate at weddings?

Let them.

All a license to officiate at a wedding really does is authorize ministers to sign a document that states a couple is legally married. It’s really not that big of deal if we lose it.

If we lose that authorization, we will simply send our couples to whoever is authorized to officiate on the legal side of things. Then we will bring them back to the Community of Faith and have a true wedding.

Simple.

But what if they take away our tax exempt status?

This one is a little trickier. If the tax exempt status is lost, all assets held by the corporation concerned must disperse their assets to other tax exempt corporations within a specified time period. As frustrating as that would be, we have to remember one important thing.

It’s just stuff.

I believe this is one of the main reasons churches should begin now to develop a strong small group ministry. If, God forbid, they start closing down churches as organizations, the ministry of the Church can continue to flourish as it did in the early days.

In closing, let me say that it is time for us a God’s people to decide where our true loyalties lie. Our true citizenship is in Heaven. We ultimately bow to the One True King. It is time for us to stop worrying about what the rest of the world does, and busy ourselves with demonstrating what life looks like when we are truly living in the Reign.
