27 After this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, “Follow me.” 28 And leaving everything, he rose and followed him. Luke 5:27 – 28 esv
In the Early Days
Being a disciple of Jesus today is not as easy as some might think. In the early days it was easier. All His followers had to do was follow Him, literally. They could observe His ways and sit and listen to His teaching. They could ply Him with questions and meditate on the answers. There was no substitute for simple following Jesus.
Things Are Different
These days things are different. It is easy to substitute things in the place of a real relationship with the Lord. People read the Bible and think they are being a disciple. They attend church and think that is discipleship. Very few however, will actually take the time to sit at Jesus’ feet and learn from Him. The Word of God was meant to drive us to Jesus. Fellowship was meant to provide us with examples from the lives of others that would drive us to Jesus. Unfortunately these things have been made an end in themselves. That prevents any real discipleship from taking place.
No Substitute
There is no substitute for actually spending time with the Lord and learning from Him, then rising up and obediently walking out what the He is seeking to work in. That is discipleship. That is living in the Reign.
